The centre of Virunga Park
The Mikeno Lodge will be your first stop during your Congo Safari. This lodge is based in the Virunga Park and will be the base camp for all activities there. Mikeno Lodge was recently built and is surrounded by a lush green jungle forest. Its location provides you with amazing panoramic views over the Virunga rift valley. The lodge is constantly visited by a great variety of animals and you will be able to spot different kinds of birds, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and even a curious bushbuck or more if luck is on your side.
A short walk away are the Virunga HQ and the Gorilla Orphanage. These places were the headquarters for the Virunga Documentary, make sure to bring some paper and a pen when you meet one of the stars from the documentary like Emmanuel de Merode, the director of the park, or André Bauma, who cares for the orphan gorillas.
When the sun goes down, all guests come together around the fireplace for a African style evening and share their experiences and the things they saw or did that day. You can relax in your room, which is a private bungalow that comes with its own lounge and a natural-stone shower in the en-suite bathroom. You can even enjoy a revitalising soaking tub after a day in the bush, nothing feels better!
